The beginnings - El comienzo

The Department of Romance Languages at the University of Oregon launched the Spanish Heritage Language program (SHL) under the direction of Prof. Claudia Holguín Mendoza in July 2012. This program is designed for students who grew up in a Spanish-speaking household or community in a country where Spanish is not the dominant language, such as the United States. SHL offers a variety of classes to meet students' needs as heritage learners. Students with Spanish-language heritage explore topics related to their cultural background, and coursework is designed to help them recover and/or develop their heritage linguistic abilities. The SHL team, a group of instructors and interns lead by Prof. Holguín, carries out research and pedagogic initiatives to develop an inclusive curriculum that allows heritage students to improve their sociolinguistic critical skills. The team is committed to the education of future bilingual leaders and professionals. Currently, there is an estimated of 1700 students who self identify as Latinos in the University of Oregon. This number is expected to keep growing in the coming years. The SHL team is looking forward to working with the university administrators, the academic community, and the general community to meet the needs of those students. |

Students in SHL not only explore the different realities and social dynamics of people in diverse Spanish- speaking cultures in contact with other languages and cultures, but also they discuss and introspectively examine their personal experiences, attitudes and perceptions.
